How long do things last?

I have just installed an energy-saving lightbulb. It is supposed to last for ten years. This is so different from my past experience with energy-saving lights that I am moved to put it on record, with the aim of reporting its demise in due course.

  • Flymo HC330 lawn mower, 22.6.07: ¶ motor gave out on 2.11.13 after working pretty hard on wet grass for most of an hour.
  • Casecom ATX 300W power pack, 6.11.07: ¶ died suddenly on 25.3.15.
  • SF Detection carbon monoxide detector, model SF350EN, 25.1.08. ¶ Defunct 25.8.14.
  • Logik DAB clock radio LCRDAB10, 30.3.11; ¶ digital radio died on 1.11.18.
  • Flymo Contour Cordless 500XT line trimmer, 11.6.12; used occasionally (four to five times a year, often until charge exhausted): ¶ battery gave out in April 2016.
  • Lightbulb, 2.10.12: Tesco Stick, 11w 630lm, supposed to last 10000 hours. "Not suitable with electronically switched circuit" -- it's on a sensor switch. ¶ Defunct 2.2.14.
  • Kettle, 19.12.12: Argos Value, 1.7l, 2.2KW; ¶ failed 12.1.13, replaced under guarantee
  • Kettle, 12.1.13: Argos Value, 1.7l, 2.2KW, £4.99; ¶ failed 9.6.16
